Predators, both large and small, can cause a colony to become aggressive. Hives set low to the ground are especially susceptible to skunks who are insect eaters by nature and enjoy a nice, sweet honeybee treat. Once a skunk locates a colony, it'll scratch at the hive's entrance.

Africanized “Killer” Bees This bee species, which resembles its European honeybee cousin, has a much more aggressive nature. Although their venom is no stronger than that of the regular honeybee, the danger comes from the fact that “killer” bees attack in much larger numbers, usually the entire colony.

Finally, a queenless colony is usually more aggressive … or, perhaps more accurately, defensive. If the queenless colony does not rear a new queen it will fail.

Venomous stinging insects include bees, wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets. Activity of these insects can occur from early spring to late fall, with the most aggressive activity occurring from August until October.
